Tulum's logistics changed with the December 2023 opening of Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), about 30 minutes south of Tulum Pueblo. Most travelers still fly into Cancun (CUN) because TQO has limited routes, but the TQO option is worth checking if you're flying from a major US hub.
Distance + time from CUN to Tulum: - ~130 km on Highway 307 - 1h 30min – 2h drive depending on traffic - ADO bus station to ADO station: ~2h 15min
Option 1: Private shuttle (best for groups/families) - Door-to-door pickup at CUN arrivals → your Tulum address - ~$90–130 USD per vehicle (not per person) — splits well across a family - Book 24h+ in advance with a reputable operator (USA Transfers, Cancun Airport Transportation, Happy Shuttle). Avoid the airport-lobby touts. - ~1h 45min total including pickup
Option 2: ADO bus (best for solo / budget) - Buy at the ADO counter inside CUN T2/T3/T4 (or in advance on ado.com.mx) - Direct buses to Tulum ADO ~every hour - ~$20–25 USD one way - 2h 15min – 2h 45min depending on stops - From Tulum ADO, taxi to your rental (50–250 pesos for the Pueblo, 200–500 pesos for the Hotel Zone)
Option 3: Rental car (best for explorers) - Pick up at CUN: $35–60/day for an economy car - Drive yourself to Tulum on Highway 307 - Park at your rental — most Pueblo rentals have parking; Hotel Zone parking can be tight - Worth it if you'll do cenotes, ruins, beach hopping - Required insurance is non-negotiable (don't fall for "I have AmEx coverage" — Mexican law requires Mexican insurance)
Option 4: Tulum Airport (TQO) — newer option - Opened December 2023, ~30 min south of Tulum - Limited US routes (American from DFW, Delta from ATL, JetBlue from JFK as of late 2024) - If your origin city has a TQO route, the math often beats the CUN drive - TQO is small — security + bags moves fast — but check carrier reliability before committing
Skip: - The CUN airport taxi monopoly desk — they'll quote you $150+ USD for a one-way ride. - Random people in the arrivals lobby offering shuttles — book in advance with a vetted operator. - Renting a car if you're staying entirely in the Hotel Zone — Hotel Zone parking is a hassle and bikes are easier inside the strip.
Tren Maya note: The Tren Maya train opened service from Cancun area to Tulum in 2024. Cancun → Tulum station is ~1h 30min, but neither end station is at the airport (it requires a transfer at both ends). Practical only if you're planning a longer regional train trip.
